Final Submission

Image
The following is my final submission for Get Schooled; A Student's Guide to Surviving the College Application Process. This experience has presented challenges that have opened my eyes to the immensely impressive industry that is the magazine business. This finalized version of the cover of Get Schooled includes all of the same elements from my quarter three submission. It has the burgundy color scheme that has grown to be the main recognizable part of Get Schooled, along with the image of the Harvard boathouse that relates in color. The captions throughout the cover are distributed so that there is still a vision of the sky, showing that "the sky is the limit" and representing further the point of my magazine. However, there is not enough empty space that it makes my cover appear empty or insufficient. The cover turned out to be perfect in the way that it portrays my theme while still maintaining a visually appealing look and feel. After much revision throughout m...

3rd Quarter Submission Feedback

My third quarter submission was regarded as very professional looking, which is exactly the image that I desired. On top of this positive feedback, the addition of pictures to my table of contents also gained a positive reaction, as opposed to the table of contents that at first was entirely colorless, and then was covered in only three photos. The updated version of this part of my magazine has improved immensely, as my cover did with the updated color scheme and subtitles that are in new locations. With an overall positive response to my updated cover and table of contents, I have determined that I do not have any changes to make to either part of my magazine. My two-page article wasn't updated from me second quarter submission because the color scheme still matches my cover and table of contents, therefore there is no need to update it. My feedback also included beneficial results regarding my two-page article and how the improvement of the original boring example really made my...

Third Quarter Submission

Image
This updated cover includes just two small adaptions,  including the movement of the title and subtitle back to the top left corner, as opposed to the center, where I had moved it for my post entitled "Updated Cover." I determined that it was the best decision to keep the original location, where it is still blatant to any viewer, although it does not look as if it is an ordinary magazine. Hopefully, by having my title in a somewhat abnormal and unexpected place, attention will be drawn to Get Schooled. I also moved, once again, the "Application Season Issue" subtitle. This time, I moved it closer to my white text that describes the content of my magazine in order to draw all attention, besides the title and focal point of my photo, down to the bridge. I felt my cover text was too spread out and busy when I included that line of text in the water, or in the top left corner. These are two changes that perfect the neat, appealing, and professional cover of my mag...

Creative Critical Reflection: Technology Integration

This product was created and researched entirely online, including the use of Blogger to outline my process, as well as entirely online research into other magazines and products that allowed me to discover further how companies like Conde Nast create such an immense and diverse amount of products that have and will continue to develop the magazine industry. My product is in part based off of the clever and clearly successful business plan and distribution model created by Conde Nast, especially involving their use of online websites and social media to further advertise and showcase their products to consumers. By using a new, up to date, and model that appeals to younger consumers, online magazine developments have been hugely successful regarding the recent changes in technological integration into the magazine industry. Without this new turn of events, the print magazine industry would be failing, but with the integration of online magazine production and distribution, the industry...

Creative Critical Reflection: Production Skills

My production skills improved thoroughly throughout the process of creating Get Schooled. I was able to conduct ample research that allowed me to realize to what extent a magazine must be planned and executed in order to create a successful product. Not only is creating a well organized and visually appealing product necessary, but advertising well and appealing to a specific audience without being too direct as to who should be buying your product is an intriguing challenge to work your way through and overcome. In the end, it became clear to me that all magazines that have become household names have been through lots of processes that determined the best way to present, advertise, and distribute their products. Online media creates new complications, and by researching magazines such as WIRED has enabled me to realize how important it is to compete not only with those products that are delivered door to door every day, but also those seemingly less threatening, but realistically mor...

Creative Critical Reflection: Audience Engagement and Media

My magazine is very reader-focused. The consumers of my product are the most important part of my business model, so by keeping their wants and desires in mind throughout the creation of Get Schooled, I have been able to create a final product that really expresses what my audience would want to engage with. I include a variety of articles and interviews that appeal to a wide range of students, but is also very personalized to a very specific group of students-the overachievers who want to go to college and are willing to buy a magazine about the application process because that is how devoted they are to a higher education. Engaging with my audience is one of the key elements of what makes my product so user-friendly and exciting for those who are passionate about college and their futures. My online magazine product will also be very user friendly and interactive. I will have a website similar to TIME, with individual articles that have been both included and not included in my print...

Creative Critical Reflection: Challenging Conventions

My product challenges conventions by not fitting directly into any one specific magazine genre. Being an academic based informative magazine targeted toward a primary teenage audience is a very unusual and unconventional tactic in the magazine industry. By challenging conventions in this overall manner, as well in smaller more visual manners, such as tilting my "in this issue" on my cover in order to create a more modern and visually appealing effect, I am producing a good example of how high school students and college students should be willing to challenge ideals that have, in the past, been considered the best way to do something, (i.e. going to a four year university immediately after high school, getting your undergrad, taking out student loans) but may not be the most effective path for you, as an individual student and person, to take. By offering more traditional options throughout my magazine, such as my "Ten Majors Worthy of Consideration" article, as wel...

The New Yorker Digital Distribution

The New Yorker  is another magazine owned by Conde Nast that includes a variety of options when it comes to subscriptions, both online and in print. The subscription packages include strictly print, with The New Yorker print edition delivered weekly with free shipping, as well as a free New Yorker tote bag. The strictly digital package includes access to newyorker.com, access to all iOS New Yorker apps, Google Newsfeed, access to the online archives, as well as the free tote bag. The digital and print subscription package includes everything included in both packages previously listed. This entails The New Yorker print edition delivered weekly with free shipping, access to newyorker.com, access to all of their iOS apps, Google Newsfeed, access to the online archives, and, of course, the free New Yorker tote bag. Allowing a variety of options for their consumers shows willingness to grow and improve themselves at the New Yorker. By developing a website and a possibility of subs...

WIRED Digital Distribution

WIRED is a technology-based magazine that provides information about the technology industry's latest inquiries and opinions. Their method of digital distribution involves an app in which they claim you can  "Experience  WIRED’s  award-winning journalism on your iPad. Every month, the  WIRED  app brings you the full issue of the magazine, packed with fresh insights, stunning design, and beautiful writing." In addition to the app, you can subscribe to WIRED's website, which includes a surplus of science and technology related articles. A subscription includes unlimited access to the WIRED website, an ad-free experience, a print subscription, and a digital edition of the WIRED magazine. This method of digital distribution is brilliant, because not only does it appeal to the audience still stuck on ordering print magazines, but it also appeals just as much, if not more, to those who are more in favor of digital media and content. This system also allows consumers t...

Distribution Research

According to Entrepreneur, the traditional distribution model has three levels. These levels include the producer, the wholesaler, and the retailer. Each of these parties individually are in the business of trying to improve their own individual markets, each trying to be better than one another, sometimes resulting in detrimental effects for the entire system. All three tiers are necessary for the system to work, but if a producer attempts to bypass the wholesaler and go straight to the distributer, it may result in the retailer dropping the producer's products. Three level distribution is considered the most fool-proof and traditional method of distributing magazines. Direct distribution is another possibility when it comes to traditional distribution strategies, though it is, as stated previously, more risky. Direct distribution involves using a magazine publisher's own warehouses, salespeople, and delivery people. This model can ultimately cut costs quite significantly if d...

Target Audience Research Best Colleges

Image
Best Colleges Magazine This magazine has a very similar goal to my magazine, since they are both targeted toward college hopefuls looking to find their perfect fit for college. Best Colleges has been relatively successful for over three decades, so researching the marketing techniques should be largely beneficial to advertising Get Schooled to a similar audience of high-schoolers. The annual magazine includes a highly regarded college ranking, advice articles about studying abroad, application fees, among other highly contested college issues, and information about financing and how to economically manage college. The publisher is the U.S. News & World Report, therefore the global ranking of colleges is highly regarded since U.S. News is likely to be the first American publisher to enter the global rankings spot. In order to get to this point of success, the Best Colleges magazine was peer-reviewed by presidents and other high ranking members of other institutions, wh...

Target Audience Research Teen Vogue

Image
Teen Vogue Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue, The New Yorker, Wired, GQ, and Allure, publishes Teen Vogue.  The magazine is targeted for teenage girls between the ages of twelve and seventeen. It was first introduced to teens when the first issue was published in 2003, featuring Gwen Stefani. About 3.6 million readers are audience to the print magazines, including subscriptions and newsstands. The online website also generates an impressive audience. Social media accounts for 22.98% of website visits, proving that social media is a large part of the revenue of Teen Vogue. However, display advertising only accounts for 0.44% of website traffic, proving that teens prefer to search for websites or be referred to them by social media, specifically Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit. Ads no longer prove to be an influential way of creating revenue, so it would be more appropriate to focus my ads on social media rather than print ads or webs...

Three Revisions

I have now uploaded the updated versions of all four of my original pages. My three primary revisions included changing the color of my title and all other major texts, such as my table of contents, the name of my interviewee Charles Karcher in my two-page article, and the "Application Season Issue" subtitle that illustrates the importance of this specific issue. The much needed change in color has provided a nice alternative element to my magazine that represents a more diverse and interesting environment as opposed to the very unexceptional black and white draft that I first created. By adding a nice, dark, yet professional crimson red, it not only further elevated the visual appeal of my magazine, but it also drew a further connection between the prestigious Harvard University by using their signature color as my main theme. This was in part to match the colors expressed on my cover by the Harvard boathouse that appears on my cover, and also because it complimented my maga...

Revised Two Page Article

Image
Original Page 1 Original Page 2 Revised Page 1 Revised Page 2 My original two-page article was very bland and had no images or colors. I added my standard Harvard crimson color to the interviewer questions and the interviewee's name in the preface of the article. This color also happens to match, almost perfectly, my subject's sweatshirt in the second picture of him. This creates a very put-together appearing theme that fits what I am going for in creating this magazine. I also added page numbers in the same font, font-size, and color that I had on my Table of Contents. This also corresponds with my limited, yet visually appealing color scheme that portrays Get Schooled's professional aspect and should appeal to the audience of students who are looking to gain insight into the college application process by reading this article. By appearing very simple with few bursts of color, it makes the entire appearance of this article more meaningful than includin...

Superbowl Commercial Target Audience Analysis

Tide Ad: David Harbour starred in a variety of Superbowl ads for Tide. They received positive media attention due to the mockery and humor they integrated. Their target audience was wide, since Harbour is from Stranger Things, this appeals to a younger audience who is deeply involved with this Netflix series. Parents and adults are also undoubtedly fans of the show, which further expands the target audience to the older generations who will be buying the laundry detergent. There were also several mentions of older iconic Superbowl commercials that would appeal to an older audience who would recognize the "Old Spice" or "Mr. Clean" references. This corresponds with the attachment to adults, older and younger alike, who all need laundry detergent. (And who all have likely watched Stranger Things!) Techniques such as incorporating references from familiar generational familiarities, in my case, references to Millennial and Generation Y would go a long way. Celebrity ...

Revised Cover

Image
Original Cover Updated Cover The updates I made to my cover include a change in color of the title, subtitle, and issue name. The color I chose was the same burgundy/crimson I used in my updated table of contents. (See previous blog post.) I also fixed a typo that made the subtitle read "A student's guide to the surviving high school and the college application process." I also condensed this subtitle to just read "A Student's Guide to Surviving the College Application Process" since that is really the main focus of my magazine. I also angled the "In this issue" to fit more appropriately with the angle of the bridge pictured on my cover image. I have also moved my subtitle to be somewhat centered, while my main title "Get Schooled" is still in the top left hand corner. I feel that this revision allows my magazine to have a more modern and experimental feel, which is exactly the type of vibe I hope to give off with my cover. I...

Revised Table of Contents

Image
Original Table of Contents Updated Table of Contents I have improved my table of contents at last! It looks substantially better and more visually appealing, and I am enthusiastic about the final result. I included multiple photos I took of a variety of students and locations. I scheduled and successfully completed a photoshoot this past weekend with two of the successful high school students pictured in my table of contents. I scheduled the photoshoot and interview with student-athlete Marguerite Andrich of Pineview. Marguerite also competes in Model UN, is a rower, and has her own charitable organization called "Bag Up the Love," which is an organization to assist homeless in receiving necessary supplies. Keara Escobedo is a theatre participant and is soon to be starring in her school's production of Annie as Annie. Keara manages to maintain an impressive workload and high GPA despite her long hours of rehearsals. She participates in the AICE...

Target Audience Research Seventeen

Image
Seventeen Seventeen Magazine is the largest monthly teen media brand, and is an incredibly popular magazine among an age group similar to the one I am targeting. Although Seventeen targets primarily females, and I am hoping to attract a more diversified audience gender wise, it is likely that young women who tend to plan ahead and prepare themselves thoroughly for their future are more likely to read my magazine than spontaneous high school guys, who aren't typically as interested in spending their free time reading about college applications and SAT requirements. Seventeen uses advertising techniques largely related to online platforms, including social media and by using seventeen.com, the largest teen magazine website. Seventeen is a strong digital leader, considering their successful website, Seventeen Now app, and their Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram that keeps teens updated on their product in a convenient way for their specific audience. Seventeen's publis...

Revisions

Image
I attended a college fair in which schools from around the country came to a local high school. Included schools were the University of Florida, Bucknell University, Lynn University, among others. Here, I took a series of photos in which I chose one to use for my magazine. It is a good angle and a good view of the entire setup. You can clearly see multiple college advisers and their booths. I also have a photoshoot planned for this weekend in which I will be able to take pictures of other students who I will interview, so that will be another revision I can use. I also added page numbers and am working on revamping my table of contents. I still need to make my title bigger on my cover and I need to arrange a photoshoot with Charles, which I may also be able to accomplish this weekend, of if not, after school one day this week or next. I will upload my revamped table of contents after I edit it down, right now I have all of the page numbers and storied listed, but I feel as if I only ne...
