Superbowl Commercial Target Audience Analysis
Tide Ad: David Harbour starred in a variety of Superbowl ads for Tide. They received positive media attention due to the mockery and humor they integrated. Their target audience was wide, since Harbour is from Stranger Things, this appeals to a younger audience who is deeply involved with this Netflix series. Parents and adults are also undoubtedly fans of the show, which further expands the target audience to the older generations who will be buying the laundry detergent. There were also several mentions of older iconic Superbowl commercials that would appeal to an older audience who would recognize the "Old Spice" or "Mr. Clean" references. This corresponds with the attachment to adults, older and younger alike, who all need laundry detergent. (And who all have likely watched Stranger Things!) Techniques such as incorporating references from familiar generational familiarities, in my case, references to Millennial and Generation Y would go a long way. Celebrity endorsements are always a nice touch, and I am using a similar technique to this in involving the world's fastest youth rower in my magazine, as well as a nationally ranked debate champion.
Doritos Blaze vs. Mountain Dew Ice: In an epic rap battle between Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones and Elf and Morgan Freeman from everything, the Superbowl audience is entertained when listening to Dinklage spit fire to Missy Elliot, followed by Freeman's rendition of Bustah Rhymes. The techniques used in this commercial involve four separate celebrity endorsements, who appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Dinklage is familiar to younger generations for his recent work, and Freeman appeals not only to older generations who grew up watching his work, but also younger generations who are still seeing him appear in films. Elliot and Rhymes are some of the greats for any generation, but the songs probably appeal more to adults who grew up hearing their music. Another technique used was incorporating two commercials together, which is unconditional and original. This draws attention to this specific ad in a sea of an excessive amount of Superbowl commercials. These techniques can be incorporated into my product by, again, local "celebrity" endorsements, as well as the combining of genres that I am initiating, which is similar to the combining of products into one epic commercial. By combining teen-directed magazines with informative magazines, I am creating one epic magazine.
Amazon's Alexa: Again, celebrity endorsements are key to a well-rounded Superbowl commercial. However, in this ad, there is also a number of regular non-celebrities who create a more real and un-staged scenario that may attract costumers who relate to the regular people using Alexa in their everyday lives. The ad also shows the capabilities of Alexa while implementing an ironic twist-that Alexa has lost her voice and celebrities have to take over. The audience then gets to be amused by Gordon Ramsey expressing his anger over a young adult's stupidity as he asks Alexa for a grilled cheese recipe, as well as Rebel Wilson making humorous comments about more idiotic questions Alexa is asked on a daily basis. There are multiple more celebrities that are meant to appeal to older audiences on top of the young audiences being targeted with Wilson and Ramsey. I can use techniques such as appealing to regular people by including very accomplished, yet very relatable students with achievable goals. This will allow my audience to feel encouraged and prone to buy my magazine, just as people are prone to buy Alexa after watching regular people use her for everyday tasks. The celebrity endorsements are, once again, a nice touch to encourage the use of a product. Superbowl commercials are prime examples of ads that target a very specific audience, especially since the Superbowl is an event that is viewed by one of the largest audiences annually in television history. By analyzing these three superb commercials with well targeted audiences, I feel better equipped to advertise my product to the best of my ability.
