Preparing for First Interview

My first interview is going to be with a senior from Sarasota High School who has had a very successful high school career, and is therefore looking into some impressive colleges. He is well prepared for his experience at a university, and he already is sure of his major. He is a close friend of mine, and I am in the process of setting up an interview time with him. He has narrowed down his college options to five viable schools, and he is currently trying to narrow it down further. I am now in the point of preparing my magazine where I am concocting questions to ask my first interviewee. From this interview, I am looking to gain insight into the college selection process as well as what type of organization and preparedness it takes to make it to your senior year of high school, all while maintaining a high grade point average, working, and participating in extracurricular activities. I also hope to find out more about how he decided on a major so early into his senior year, and how h...

Magazine Project Planning-Health

Image
Health is a magazine that relates to my magazine because it gives recommendations for a healthy, happy lifestyle, which is similar to my magazine's mission to help kids through high school and the college application process. Both magazines could be considered "lifestyle" related because they are working toward improving people's lives. The cover of this issue of Health includes a picture of Julianne Hough with a messy font saying"#GOALS" on top of her image. Her head is covering the majority of the magazine's title, but the audience can tell that it says "Health" at the tip in big, black letters. Unlike the other magazines I have reviewed, Health includes a title with a capitalized first letter, followed by lowercase other letters. The cover is very colorful and has a lot going on, which tells me that the audience is most likely made up of excitable people who are looking to get fit. The target audience must be younger than that of Everyday si...

Magazine Project Planning-Rachael Ray Everyday

Everyday is related to my magazine because it is lifestyle related and is meant to guide and help people. The difference is the age group, since my magazine focuses on high school aged students, but Everyday is targeted to an older audience. The cover of this issue contains a picture of Rachael Ray holding a Christmas wreath, introducing this issue as the holiday issue. The main colors used on this cover are red, black, and white. The "everyday" in the top of the cover is, again, not capitalized and is in black lettering. There are subtitles running up and down both the left and the right sides of the cover in black lettering, except for the occasional red phrase to grasp attention. The title of the magazine is at the bottom in a different, loopier font. Considering this is the Christmas and holiday issue, there is a large amount of red and green throughout the magazine. The majority of the articles include recipes that all share the same font. There are up to 4 or 5 recipes ...

Magazine Project Planning-Teen Vogue

Teen Vogue is similar to Seventeen magazine, since they are both aiming toward the same audience and include some of the same features. This magazine relates heavily to my magazine since it also covers social issues that concern teens in today's world, as well as advice and help on getting through high school and not college. The cover layout of Teen Vogue includes a lowercase "teen" in a white, bold font, followed by a polished, pink "VOGUE," which is visually appealing and draws attention to the title, without taking away from the closeup of Austin Mahone that appears underneath the title. In opposition to Seventeen, Teen Vogue has subtitles lining the left side of the cover, also in pink and white lettering. The colors that appear most often are black and white, which gives the magazine a sophisticated appearance. The occasional pop of red or green allows for the visuals of the issue to remain interesting and appealing. The same font is used throughout the wh...

Magazine Project Planning-Seventeen

Image
Seventeen magazine shares the same age audience as my magazine, therefore I will be reviewing this magazine and how it draws the attention of high school students worldwide. The cover is quite busy, as opposed to TIME, which consistently keeps a very simple cover. This shows that teenagers perhaps prefer magazines with lots going on, including a wide range of colors and subtitles on the cover. The cover of this particular issue includes a closeup of Yara Shahidi, as well as a small red circle under her face that gives a short description of her claim to fame and what issues she will be covering in this issue. The title of the magazine includes a large "seventeen," not capitalized, in large white, italicized writing. The right side of the cover includes blue and white lettering that describes the contents of the magazine. Throughout the magazine, there is a very large array of colors, including lots of blues and pinks. The fonts change regularly throughout the magazine, depend...

Magazine Project Planning-TIME

TIME magazine's goal is to inform their audience. By creating my magazine, this is what I also hope to achieve. This issue of TIME that I will be analyzing is, as per usual, quite political. The cover includes three wrecking balls meant to depict Donald Trump. The wrecking balls are orange with vibrant yellow hair and an open mouth with perfectly straight and white teeth. The images do not include eyes, which is most likely a metaphor that has something to do with how blind the president may be to the trouble brewing in his cabinet. I assume this because the single title on the cover is "The Wrecking Crew" with a subtitle expressing "How Trump's cabinet is dismantling government as we know it." TIME is displayed at the top of the cover in capital grey lettering. Your eye is not drawn to the title of the magazine, but to the large orange wrecking balls. However, the standard and recognizable red outline of the cover immediately gives away that the magazine is...

Decision

After much consideration, I have determined that I will be creating a magazine for my project. The magazine will be student directed, it will include interviews with successful students, high school graduates who will walk the readers through college application and selection processes, as well as high school athletes who can provide an overview about the balance and determination it takes to be a student athlete. This magazine will be directed toward aspiring college students and current high school students who want to be provided with an opportunity to read about other students who have perhaps taken different approaches, and to therefore be able to get more of an idea about what type of major they may want, or what university and career path may suit them best. There are millions of high school students who feel overwhelmed by the college application process, on top of high school in general. This magazine will be geared toward assisting in making these highly regarded students...

Project Selection-Magazine

Print journalism is unique in the way that it is now becoming more rare and refined. Instead of reading the newspaper or magazines daily, people now enjoy online news more commonly than they enjoy that of which is print. Therefore, print journalism is, in my opinion, becoming of greater importance than ever before. This generation's printed magazines may be the last, meaning these will be the physical remnants of modern day culture that are preserved throughout history. Anyway, creating a magazine appeals to me because it would be a project that permits the use of my writing talents. I love to write, and creating an informative magazine that would encourage the spread of knowledge would be a massive, yet extremely rewarding, challenge to take on. In Media Studies, I have found my Magazine Analysis of Time to be very intriguing. I learned a great deal about the layout of the infamous news magazine, including the use of national, world, and political articles in a specific order that...

Project Selection-Film

Film production contains many aspects, some of which I have been familiarized with. So far in Media Studies, I have learned that I am interested in a multitude of these aspects. Specifically I have enjoyed looking deeper into the HBO series The Newsroom and the classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off film. By looking further into these works, I have been able to recognize certain features which appeal to me about creating a film project. In The Newsroom I have found the angles and shots very interesting, especially since they vary so greatly. The show is like a mockumentary in some ways-the character's don't acknowledge they are being videotaped, although sometimes we get a sense that they are somewhat aware. I am enthusiastic about these types of story lines, such as The Office. Ferris Bueller's Day Off also includes qualities of this style of film, especially since Ferris talks to the audience directly throughout the film. If I were to choose the film project, I would be de...
