Magazine Project Planning-TIME
TIME magazine's goal is to inform their audience. By creating my magazine, this is what I also hope to achieve. This issue of TIME that I will be analyzing is, as per usual, quite political. The cover includes three wrecking balls meant to depict Donald Trump. The wrecking balls are orange with vibrant yellow hair and an open mouth with perfectly straight and white teeth. The images do not include eyes, which is most likely a metaphor that has something to do with how blind the president may be to the trouble brewing in his cabinet. I assume this because the single title on the cover is "The Wrecking Crew" with a subtitle expressing "How Trump's cabinet is dismantling government as we know it." TIME is displayed at the top of the cover in capital grey lettering. Your eye is not drawn to the title of the magazine, but to the large orange wrecking balls. However, the standard and recognizable red outline of the cover immediately gives away that the magazine is TIME. In the bottom left corner is a very subtle "time.com" and the top left corner contains the date on which this issue was released. The table of contents is located immediately after a two-page Chevrolet ad, and contains four columns that separate the sections in which articles have been written. The table of contents also includes a picture that takes up about half of the page, with a small caption describing the image. The Brief (pages 7-14), the View (pages 17-20), the Features (pages 22-42), and the Time Off (pages 49-60) sections are divided strictly under these categories. The main feature is on page 22, and runs until page 34, with the exception of two separate ads on pages 31 and 32. The other features and articles are also largely concerning politics, although there are also articles concerning topic areas such as health and the world. An article in The Brief category discussing President Xi of China's recent announcement includes a photo of the president as well as six members of the Standing Committee. An article in The View category about a new "frontier of medicine" regarding heart transplants using the hearts of diseased donors includes a single photo of a green and blue tinted heart. The included ads are often related to health care or pharmaceuticals directed toward an older audience. The distribution number for TIME is 3,032,581. The magazine currently has an audience of about 26 million readers, making it the most largely circulated weekly magazine. TIME has been awarded the title of Magazine of the Year at the National Magazine Awards, as well as Pulitzer Prizes, Online Journalism Awards, SABEW Best in Business Awards, as well as the Worth Bingham Prize, among many others.
