Magazine Project Planning-Health
Health is a magazine that relates to my magazine because it gives recommendations for a healthy, happy lifestyle, which is similar to my magazine's mission to help kids through high school and the college application process. Both magazines could be considered "lifestyle" related because they are working toward improving people's lives. The cover of this issue of Health includes a picture of Julianne Hough with a messy font saying"#GOALS" on top of her image. Her head is covering the majority of the magazine's title, but the audience can tell that it says "Health" at the tip in big, black letters. Unlike the other magazines I have reviewed, Health includes a title with a capitalized first letter, followed by lowercase other letters. The cover is very colorful and has a lot going on, which tells me that the audience is most likely made up of excitable people who are looking to get fit. The target audience must be younger than that of Everyday since the cover uses millennial aimed propaganda tactics, such as hashtags and young celebrities such as Julianne Hough. The subtitles are scattered around the cover, and provide information about what will be included in the magazine, which involves healthy skin, burning calories, and getting toned. The magazine includes lots of colors and images. There is no one color that shows up more than the others, there are purples, blues, yellows, reds, and greens scattered throughout the magazine. The font is fairly consistent throughout the magazine, more often than not the font is a simple Times New Roman in black without straying too far from the standard 12 point font. The colorful aspects of the magazine are found more in the images and captions rather than the wording itself. Articles included in Health are "Avoiding Office Temptations" on page 37, which discusses junk food in the workplace, and leads me to believe that the audience is older than Teen Vogue and Seventeen, since Health discusses issues in the workplace and not any information regarding school. More articles in Health include "Working Out Saved My Life," which tells stories of women who used exercise to help them through horrible times in their lives, and lasts from page 93 to page 97, and "What Your Mom's Body Says About You" from pages 59 to 61. Advertisements appear fairly often in Health, such as an ad for Tylenol on page 19, an ad for Geico on page 28, as well as another full paged ad on page 106 for Oscar Mayer natural ham. Photos included in Health include images of healthy food options such as Broccoli-Cheddar Quiche on page 107, pictures of workout clothes such as the Nike and New Balance featured on pages 54 and 55, and also multiple images of celebrity examples on page 18. The circulation of Health magazine is 1,370,770. While the magazine has not been nominated itself for any awards, Health does host the Annual Health Awards, which were introduced in 2017 to recognize outstanding healthcare professionals and efforts.
