Target Audience Research Best Colleges
Best Colleges Magazine
This magazine has a very similar goal to my magazine, since they are both targeted toward college hopefuls looking to find their perfect fit for college. Best Colleges has been relatively successful for over three decades, so researching the marketing techniques should be largely beneficial to advertising Get Schooled to a similar audience of high-schoolers. The annual magazine includes a highly regarded college ranking, advice articles about studying abroad, application fees, among other highly contested college issues, and information about financing and how to economically manage college. The publisher is the U.S. News & World Report, therefore the global ranking of colleges is highly regarded since U.S. News is likely to be the first American publisher to enter the global rankings spot. In order to get to this point of success, the Best Colleges magazine was peer-reviewed by presidents and other high ranking members of other institutions, which accounted for 15% of the magazine's advertising and perfecting, as well guidance counselor reviews which accounted for 7.5% with the help of about 1,500 counselors. In addition, student retention and graduation rate accounts for 20%, as does faculty information and class size, while another 7.5% is regarding graduation rate performance. The final percentages are 10% dedicated to financial resources, which is very popular among financially sensitive students, and 15% dedicated to student selectivity, and finally 5% related to alumni giving rate. These percentages give me the exact information on how to appeal to my audience that I need to perfect my magazine in terms of content. My content is similar to Best Colleges, although my magazine is more focused on the students and assisting them in getting through the tough college application process, whereas the U.S. News Magazine here is more focused on ranking the schools, which is also helpful, but not as directly. My content is both unique while also being logically related to the topics and articles that have proven to be effective in the past in works such as the Best Colleges Magazine. This research has allowed me to realize there are published and polished works that have seen success and large audiences. Now I have a more clear idea as to how I can ensure my magazine is targeted efficiently toward college hopefuls who are likely to read Best Colleges as well as Get Schooled in order to retain as much useful information possible regarding their prospective schools.
