Use of Conventions

My project challenges the conventions typically associated with teen directed magazines. Magazines directed toward the age group I am targeting are more often thought of as "juvenile" and "unimportant" reading material, whereas, my magazine is breaking down those barriers by showing how teens are capable of being interested in more serious subject matters that will positively benefit their futures. By straying away from the teenage magazine norms, I am presenting evidence that modern teenagers are well rounded and more capable than sometimes credited to be. I am prospectively creating a new genre of magazine, a magazine that not only targets teens, but also provides important information regarding colleges and universities. It is not in the same category as Teen Vogue or Seventeen, even though the targeted age groups are the same, yet it is also not to be directly associated with magazines such as Time, which provides insight into the life of an adult as well as necessary, relevant information for the targeted age group. Therefore, my magazine is challenging conventions not only of my magazine genre, but of all magazine genres. My magazine is in a new genre that not only provides relevant and influential information, but is also directed toward an age group in which magazines are often for strictly entertainment purposes. I am attempting to break down the unspoken standard that is present in today's society that implies teens are not significant enough to have their own magazine directed toward them, for primarily their age group, that provides the necessary and essential information they need to make informed decisions regarding their futures. This social issue is present in society, whether or not it is realized. The apparent unimportance of teenagers and their opinions is becoming a significant flaw in the outlook of the world. As we see more teenage activists and influencers gain relevance, we should begin to respect this meaningful group of people who are the next generation, and have proven capable to do incredible things. Young people are important too, and my magazine is here to prove that.
